"Rainbow – A Brief History"

In the beginning… Produced by Thames Television, the first ever episode of Rainbow was shown in October 1972 and was originally intended to be a British version of the American show Sesame Street. The first shows were presented by David Cook Along side a puppet with a zip for a mouth called Zippy, a bear called Bungle and interjections from glove puppets Sunshine and Moony and folk group Telltale.

In 1973 George a pink hippo was introduced, David Cook left the show and Z Cars actor Geoffrey Hayes stepped in.

In 1980 the hugely successful pre-school programme featured memorable musical trio Rod, Jane and Freddy who wrote and performed the popular musical slots. Rainbow seamlessly combined education and fun; intermingling stories, songs and short films with scenes inside the Rainbow House featuring noisy Zippy, shy George and inquisitive Bungle who in turn were all surrogate children to active parent Geoffrey.

In March 1992 following the non-renewal of Thames' franchise and after 1,000 episodes the final episode of Rainbow was broadcast. However, two revival series since followed; the first featuring Zippy, George, Bungle and Cleo (a blue rabbit) running a toy store and the second in 1996 entitled Rainbow Days a series of ten minute adventures presented by Dale Superville. The original Rainbow TV show is as popular now as ever and can been seen on Nick Jr. Classics.

In August 2009 TV legends Zippy, George and Bungle take to the stage as they get up to all kinds of fun and frolics in a non-stop live show full of zip! Zippy Superstar DJ features all of the fun ingredients associated with the classic Rainbow TV show and is suitable for all the family. Mike Newman Jnr, (www.mikemewmanjnr.com) the shows new Presenter & Producer of Rainbow Live! says: “I am delighted to be bringing the never-ending fun of Rainbow to the live stage.
